Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment

Emma King is a registered Occupational Therapy Driving Assessor with Transport for NSW. We can support you to have an assessment completed if you have been referred by your doctor, or Transport for NSW. We can assist you with a general assessment and can also complete an assessment for disability modifications such as hand controls, steering aids, left foot accelerator, additional mirrors, and vehicle transfer aids. 

An OT Driving Assessment takes 2 to 3 hours. It involves:

• An "off-road" assessment regarding driving history, and skills needed for driving, including vision, physical range of movement, coordination, reaction time and cognitive functioning. 
• An "on-road" assessment of driving ability is then conducted in a Driving Instructor's vehicle with dual braking. The OT sits in the back seat during this driving session to observe and evaluate the client's ability to drive with their medical condition or disability.

We work with several Driving Instructors on the Mid North Coast of NSW, including:

Kempsey to Coffs Harbour 
Specialist Driving Instructor Julie Crocker of Drivewise Training School (www.drivewisetrainingschool.com.au​) who has a modified vehicle, fitted with modified controls including:

• Spinner knob (standard and electric "Lodgeson's" brand)
• Hand controlled brake/accelerator 
• Fadiel Italiana Satellite Hand Accelerator 
• Left foot accelerator

The practice accepts referrals from private individuals who require an assessment.

We also accept referrals from a range of funding bodies including:

• NDIS
• icare - Lifetime Care / Workers Care
• Workers Compensation insurers
• CTP Insurers
• My Aged Care - Home Care Packages
• Aboriginal Health Services
• Department of Veteran's Affairs - Vehicle Assistance Scheme.

NDIS Services

We are an NDIS Registered provider of Occupational Therapy for adults with physical, neurological, psychosocial and intellectual disabilities.

We provide a range of assessments including:

• Functional Capacity Assessment
• Assistive Technology Assessment
• ​Vehicle Modification Assessment
• OT Driving Assessment and lessons with a Specialist Driving Instructor can also be provided under NDIS funding if a clinical need is identified. Emma has assessed many NDIS funded learner drivers with a disability, including physical, intellectual, and acquired brain injuries, who have been able to access lessons with a Specialist Driving Instructor to assist in achieving the goal of getting a driver's licence. Emma and Julie Crocker, Specialist Driving Instructor have supported numerous NDIS participants to return to driving using modified driving controls after catastrophic events such as a stroke or spinal cord injury. We are passionate about supporting our clients to be able to drive, and celebrate every client's success when they pass a driving test to obtain a licence.
